Work 11.25.08

Objectives: Students will read and write for understanding and literary response.
Discuss comprehension and critical thinking questions.
Identify and illustrate the seven deadly sins.

Background:
Sibyl, her mother, Mrs. Vane, and James (Jim), discuss her relationship with Dorian whom she calls Prince Charming. Jim, cautions her mother to guard Sibyl, and vows to kill anyone who harms her.

Aim:
Which one of the seven deadly sins is most evident so far in Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray?

Do Now: Have you ever had a friend whose girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other who you did not like? Were you envious of their relationship? Did you experience any of the seven deadly sins?
-My brother from another mother, Justin Ramirez had a girlfriend that never sat right with me. When he first told me they were together me and her didn't vibe from the start. Her Ora was just all effed up. I always told him, "yo kid, she's not the one...you need to watch her man !" But he was too blinded by love. Over time I tried to get used to her and began building a relationship until one day in class she stole my phone. She denies it to this day, but if its two people in the world and one gets robbed...YEA ! I told him he still was on that "nah man". So eventually me and my brother stopped talking till months later, when I find out shes dating his best friend ! -_-

Discussion Questions:
Identify members of Sibyl Vane’s family and analyze their interrelationships.
Mrs. Vane is just so far the whole Dorian, Sibyl relationship. She's pretty laid back. Jim, her brother is a bit too over protective, he almost speaks as if he wants Sibyl. He warns his mom to watch over her. He plays more of the father role in the family.

Examine the various reactions of Sibyl, Mrs. Vane, and Jim toward Dorian.
Both Sibyl and her mother think highly of Dorian, and see him as a well rounded person. Jim on the other hand just assumes the worst of Dorian.

Critical Response:

Examine the universality of the statement, “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.”

At first Jim saw his father as a scoundrel for not being there. But, as he got older and his mother explained to him the type of guy his dad was he starts to forgive him.

Cooperative Learning:
We identified the seven deadly sins of Pride, Avarice (greed), Envy, Wrath (anger), Lust, Gluttony, Sloth. Please use the magazines in our classroom and cut out images OR Draw illustrations that you think represents each sin.

  1. Gluttony
  2. Lust

Work 11.24.08

Objectives:
Students will read and write for understanding.
Students will answer comprehension and critical thinking questions.
Students will use technology to create a power point (in class project).
Chapter 4 Background information for better understanding:
Dorian spends much of his time with Lord Henry, who manipulates Dorian's mind with his philosphy of subjects such as marriage, women, and fidelity. Dorian reveals his infatuation with Sibyl Vane, and actress. Dorian distances himself more from Basil.

Do Now: Free Write the Prediction: How will Dorian's engagement to Sibyl change his relationship with Lord Henry?
-Dorian engagement to Sibyl to me can go both ways. It could end up bad for both Sibyl and Lord Henry. Like Dorian might continue his obsession of Lord Henry's persuasive lectures or he could continue falling deeply in love with Sibyl and just forget about Lord Henry.

Comprehension Check Questions:

Who is Victoria?
Victoria is Lord Henry's Wife.

How would you characterize Sibyl Vane?
Sibyl Vane is a young, shy, talent actress that adores Dorian.

How/Where did she meet Dorian?
They met each other out of Dorian's new found curiosity of the world. Where he goes out to a play in which she played in (Romeo and Juliet), and threw flowers at her. And then it went from there.

What does she call Dorian?
Prince Charming.

How long do they know each other in the story so far?
Two and a half weeks.

Critical Thinking:

Examine the relationship between Lord Henry and His wife Victoria and compare with the relationship between Lord Henry and Dorian.
The relationship is pretty weird def. not traditional. Both Dorian and Victoria share one trait that Lord Henry admires, they're both beautiful. However Lord Henry does not want the two to talk.

How does Lord Henry feel about the relationship between Dorian and Sibyl?

He basically knocks the whole relationship, and thinks it won't last.

Analyze Lord Henry's view of women, men and fidelity.

Analyze the change in the relationship between Dorian and Basil.
The two are starting to separate and grow further and further apart due to Dorian's fascination of Lord Henry.

Homework 11.20.08

Objective: Students will analyze text and describe the characters in Chapters 1 and 2. Students will conduct online research of mythological Greek figures, then synthesize the information by connecting it to character(s) in the text.

Lord Henry Wotton: How is he a manipulator and an initiator?
He’s a manipulator and initiator because of the way he's so convincing and leaves his audience thirsty for more by persuasive speaking.

What kind of cigarettes does he smoke? Is this a hint of a decadent lifestyle?
He smokes cigarettes lace heavily with opium. This is sort of a hint of a decadent lifestyle because the opium enhances the cigarette increasing the high...and in smokers eyes makes it better than what it already is.

How is he cynical?
He's cynical because he feels beauty is the only thing that matters in life. Without it, life's nothing in his eyes.

Basil Hallward: Cite his reaction to his painting of Dorian Gray?
He feels he put too much of himself in the picture, which is breaking the "rule" of art. So, he then refuses to display it.
"There is too much of myself in the thing, Harry,—too much of myself!"

How has he violated the code of an artist according to Wilde's preface?
“To reveal art and conceal the artist.” This is basically the code of an artist and Basil broke the code by putting too much of himself in it and by showing Lord Henry, then no longer "concealing" it.

He obviously sees in Dorian absolute beauty and harmony. Identify where in the passages.

What is the main conflict in this paragraph?
The main conflict here is; as the picture of Dorian Gray being his best work of art he doesn't want to put it on display as Lord Henry thinks nothing else but to show it.

Cassio(Thinking highly of Iago.):

(As Iago exits, Emilia enters after a minute or two.)

Emilia:

Hey Cassio. I know it’s a lot going on but don’t think nothing of it. I heard O and Dessy talking and she’s standing by you strongly. And O said he may be a bit mad, but you guys are always going to be boys.

Cassio:

Oh word… Thanks. But, I still want to talk to Dessy alone. You think you could help me with that ?

Emilia:

No problem, I got you. I’ll get you guys alone so you can chat in private.

Yo can you please talk to Othello and let him know that I still got his back and that he is still my boy.

Desdemona:

Of course I will. I would love for you guys to put it all behind you and be friends like back in the day. You do love my husband...c’mon you guys are ride or dies.

Cassio:

I know, that’s what I want, we’ve been friends for so long, he’s like my brother and not trying to lose that. Thanks Dessy.

Desdemona:

Be thou assured, good Cassio, I will do all my abilities in thy behalf.

(Cassio nods and lights go down.)

Lights back up; enter Othello and Iago inside the Castle.

Othello:

What’s up man?

Iago:

What’s good, yo?

Othello:

I’m chilling. Kind of just laid back taking it as it comes.

Iago: (laughing)

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID.

(Othello and Iago walk together to meet Desdemona and see Casio making his exit.)

Iago :( in a harsh whisper)

I don’t like the look of this man; he has to be banging her.

Othello :( confused)

What you mean man? And was that really Cassio walking out of my lady quarters.

Iago:

Word! It had to be him, but I don’t know. Because why would Cassio be leaving from Dessy’s quarters.

Othello:

I’m not sure, but I highly doubt he’s banging her Iago…

Iago:

I’m just saying man. You never know. But, hey...um there’s your girl.

Desdemona:

Hey babe, I need to talk to you. I spoke with Cassio and he told me that he’s still your ride or die, and still want to be boys. You guys need to squash the beef and be cool again. No one’s promise tomorrow yah know.

Othello:

Okay fine, whatever. But, this is for you. I’ll meet with him and see if we could drop this beef. He can come whenever he wants to. I won’t deny his friendship; we are like best of buds after all.

Desdemona: (feeling a bit accomplished)

Thanks babe. I owe you.

(Desdemona leaves Othello alone with Iago)

Iago:

Do you think Cassio knew about you guys from the jump? Or is he really that much of an asshole?

Othello:

Of course he knew. He’s the one who hooked us up.

Iago: (with a disapproved look)

Cassio sort of does seem like the low down dirty b*#ch that’ll do something like that. And he definitely seems like he’s o’d close to Dessy my G. Cassio is younger and a big hit with the ladies after all. You know this MAN!

Othello:

Nah, dawgs. I highly doubt it. She loves me way too much!

Iago :

Look at it. Stop listening to your heart, let your brain listen. Because honestly I just think you’re lying to yourself man, because you’re afraid of it being true. Your best friend taking your lady... C’mon man just think for a bit.

Othello: (sucks teeth, a bit frustrated and distraught)

You sure like, you really think my boy would do something like that?

Iago:

YUP, why wouldn’t he? I’m just saying man; I’m trying to look out for you.

Othello:

I know man. And thanks. I guess you’re right. Why wouldn’t he do it? The world is a mean cold place. And he did just come out the room with her.

Iago:

Yup, see I told you. And he tried to avoid you. Why would he do that if he wasn’t banging her?

Othello: (coming to a conclusion)

Your right, he did try to hide. I can’t believe this shit. Ah F*&K! Your right.

Iago:

See man, I told yah. You just can’t trust anybody.

Othello:

Your right. THAT BITCH! That’s it... Watch it’s going to be anew Othello around here.

(Desdemona and Emilia enters the scene, as the men call for dinner)

Desdemona:

What’s wrong baby cakes?

Othello:

I have an F*CK#$G headache. Just leave me alone.

Desdemona:

Oh I know what would help…

(Desdemona pulls out the handkerchief and places it on Othello head and gently massages it. Othello then pushed away the handkerchief after a short while. The handkerchief falls and hits the ground.)

Othello:

Don’t even pick it up. Just bring them damn double cheeseburgers.

(Emilia realizes it’s the perfect time to go and slipped the handkerchief away. She took the hanky and brought it to Iago. Iago sick plan is then ignited.)

Iago:

Good looking out E.

Emilia:

No problem. But, what are you going to use it for exactly?

Iago:

Mind your business, and get out of here.

(Lights go down and scene closes.)

ACT III: SCENE IV

SETTING: IN FRONT OF THE CASTLE.

Desdemona:

Hey Bo Bo, you seen Cassio around here?

Clown:

Nah, haven’t seen him. This guy is always somewhere. And I wouldn’t be able to say anyways.

Desdemona:

Why, man?

Clown:

Because he’s obviously a soldier and would be able to kick my ass up and down this castle.

Desdemona: (laughing)

So go find him. My husband doesn’t pay you to just sit around.

Clown:

Listen lady if I go find him, he’s going to be pretty upset with me. I think he wants to just be left alone. And besides I haven’t seen a raise in ages, your husband still pays me minimum wage. Sheesh.

Desdemona:

That’s not my fault. You should take it up with him. But, yea is there anything you could do for me to help me find Cassio?

Clown:

Ah I guess if I see him, I could probably tell him if you’re willing to let my pockets visit there long lost Cousin BENJAMIN!

Desdemona:

Okay, here you go (hands clown 100 bucks). If you see him…Ah don’t forget, it’s really important.

Clown: (with a huge grin)

ALL RIGHTY THEN!

[Clown exits the scene. Desdemona continues pacing before the castle hoping to find Cassio where she bumps into Emilia]

Desdemona:

Hey girl...

Emilia:

Was up Des ?

Desdemona:

Can you believe I still didn’t find that handkerchief?

Emilia:

Still…Your man going to kill you.

Desdemona:

I know but, I just can’t get a clue of where I lost it.

Desdemona:

Where should I lose that handkerchief, Emilia?

Emilia:

I don’t know. It’s just a handkerchief. You should of…

Desdemona:

Believe me; I’d rather lose a million dollars. Othello he’s just so ah. Sometimes it just gets on my nerves. He thinks every man in this world wants to take me away from him.

Emilia:

Is he not, jealous?

Desdemona:

Is he, that man is more jealous than…? I don’t even know, words can’t describe.

Emilia:

Okay girl, I’m out here he comes. Good luck!

[Emilia exits the scene as Othello enters]

Desdemona:

Hey babe.

Othello: (kisses Desdemona passionately)

Hey baby cakes. How’s your day going?

Desdemona:

Well, my lord. Its okay I guess.

Othello:

Let me hold your hand, did you use that lotion from Bath and Body Works yet?

Desdemona:

Yeah, it’s okay. Smells great though.

Othello:

Desdemona:

Nothing, cleaned up a bit today.

Othello:

You sure just cleaning and not with another dude ? Hmmmm ?

Desdemona:

NO! Othello what the FCUK is your problem?

Othello:

Nothing, just been a bit suspicious.

Desdemona:

You have really been acting weird. But, yea I have a question.

Othello:

What is it ?

Desdemona:

Don’t give me attitude. Ah Cassio wants to talk to you about something.

Othello:

Oh really, well ah before I answer that..Let me borrow your handkerchief my eyes are itching.

Desdemona:

What handkerchief ?

Othello:

That which I gave you.

Desdemona:

Oh that one, its in the car.

Othello: (growing aggravated)

Which one ? Huh ?

Desdemona:

What you don’t believe me ?

Othello:

No its just that..well that handkerchief has been handed down through my family. And you know that’s all I have since my grandmother’s motorcycle accident. -_- And I’m upset because I thought I could trust you with it. But, you LOSS it !

Desdemona:

Is’t possible ?

Othello:

It definitely is. And I can’t believe you don’t have it. And that’s all I had left.

Classwork 10.3.08

Objective: Students will understand how multiple levels of meaning are conveyed in a text.
Students will apply prior knowledge of the literary device Theme, and Setting to the plot of Shakespeare's Othello
Aim: What are the various themes that we can apply to shakespeare's Othelloand what settings do you think are appropriate to represent the settings in your act?
Do Now: Write a paragraph on what you think is an appropriate theme for Shakespeare's Othello
-The theme would have to be jealousy. Jealousy is all through out Othello. It was jealousy that lead to the plotting of Othello's downfall by Iago. Roderigo also shows another form of jealous, within Othello; Roderigo is jealous of Desdemonda and Othello's mariiage. He is jealous of Othello because he wants Desdeminda and feels Othello doesn't deserve here.
[CONTINUE IN COOPERATIVE LEARNING ! ]

COOPERATIVE LEARNING: Othello's Theme of Jealousy.
...Jealousy also reappears through Iago. Iago was jealous of Cassio's position, because thats the job he wanted. As Iago was jealous of Cassio, Cassio was one of the two characters that showed no sign of jealousy throughout the enitire play.
